Any interest in a nice smallish East Coast USA gaming con?

Talks that may or may not have anything to do with Hala or NWN

Any interest in a nice smallish East Coast USA gaming con?

Post by galen_macbyrne »

I've been going to a nice con in NJ for years, that is the East Coast's best all-gaming con. Would be a good place to do some recruiting, or even just have a meet at. I have possible plans for a future CoPaPpy demo - am discussing it on Avlis boards atm, will suggest on Arkaz as well. It's at a nice hotel in Morristown, NJ which is pretty accessible from NYC or various points in NJ by train or bus. The hotel is walking distance from the train/Bus station, even, though they have a shuttle. Plenty of food options in the area - several have discounts for con attendees. Parking is free to hotel guests, and validated and free daily for con attendees.

I'd recommend the July event, it's much better attended. The company currently runs 3 cons a year, the flagship one in early July, a smaller one in mid-February, and an even smaller one in November that is targeted to new game developers. The July one, DexCon, has 1000+ events scheduled over 96 hours, from Wed. night through Sunday afternoon (event schedules are archived on their website). They have RPGs, CCGs, Board Gaming, Miniature Gaming, LARPs, Computer/LAN/Video gaming, serious poker and spades tourneys, MTG tournament, fannish game shows, game and toy auction, puzzles and other contests with nice "dealer room cash" prizes, plenty of food/pub options nearby too, plus the con suite and special snacking extravaganzas. The February event, Dreamation, is a day shorter, Thursday night through Sunday afternoon, and the November one, Metatopia, is just the weekend. What's nice about the con, is that unlike large cons there's no pay-to-play for individual events - if you've gotten a membership, you sign up for anything that interests you and go play, as long as sign-up's not full, and you can sign up for events before the con even starts. Winning games or tournaments, or just participitating in some things, gives you "prize points" that are redeemable for games, toys, books, and other loot throughout the con, or even save up and spend them at a later con of theirs.

I generally am on the Board Gaming staff and am comped in, but I have a lifetime free pass to all their cons, and don't HAVE to work the con, so I could be free to be with any CoPaP peeps instead. I don't vend at these, either, unless they lose a bunch of vendors. I've known most of the con senior staff for years, some of them for decades. I can talk them into free and discounted passes to the con.

The website for the cons is http://www.dexposure.com/home.html. Hotel: http://morristown.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotel ... x.jsp?null. There's a spillover hotel as well if that fills up.

Any interest?

http://www.dexposure.com/home.html (leave off the dot at the end. I'm such a Conan the Grammarian I had to end the sentence with a period.)

Dates are July 3-7 this year. Steve Jackson is GoH. (Munchkin, et al)
