Arkon's Future Rig!!!

Post by Arkon »

Alright.. there are two potential builds I'm looking at. Both are very similar.

First

EVGA P55 FTW 200 Motherboard Suggestions for alternative motherboards that will do what I want are encouraged and welcome please as this one is getting hard to find and price is going up.

Intel Core I5 760

Corsair XMS3 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 RAM

Either a
Radeon HD 5850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ Eyefinity

Or a

SAPPHIRE 100312SR Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity Which one depends on cost/ability to buy at time unless other good suggestions are made :D

Cooler Master HAF 922M ATX Mid Tower Case

Cooler Master GX Series 750W

Thoughts, Ideas, Improvements, Cost savers? Most of these were found on either Tigerdirect.com or Newegg.com so if anyone has any other ideas from other sites let me know but this should build me a machine that can run NWN on it's highest settings without bogging down :D

I recommend a 24" widescreen monitor or bigger.

Seems solid. Vid cards are both good, unless there is a break point in your costs, I'd go with the 2gb one. One thing on Corsair Memory. I've seen situations, My current computer included, where the parity/latency had to be manually entered into the BIOS for it to work. I think it's unique to a different brand of motherboard though, as I've not seen the same issue with any EVGA mains.

Am I missing the keyword USB 3.0 from the specs?
An (external) Solid State drive is something I would very much consider de rigeur in the next 2-4 years for modern kit and without USB 3 you simply aren't going to get any benefit from the speed of what back in the 80s we used to call a RAM drive. I had a 32KB [yes KB] one) and it was ace.

USB2.0 is only marginally slower, and is standard. (And it's got 6 included with the MOBO's southbridge infrastructure.) Wait a few months and get a Thunderbolt I/O slot card and enjoy something 5x faster if transfer speed from main-unit to device is a priority.

New rig is bought and paid for. All the parts are in except the motherboard. I should get that on monday. All hours well I should be up and running monday afternoon. I intends to run it though its paces that night. If all is good I intend to run a plot consisting of a daily event that will last approximately 5 to 6 days. All are invited to join in.

As soon as I know for sure my system it's hours to go I will post the time of events. I will try to hold all the events at the same time of day.
