On Metagaming

Post by NWDuneAuron »

Metagaming is simply another term for using out of character information rather than just the in character information your character has learnt whilst you are playing her/him.

Some metagaming is acceptable. Checking the playerlist to see where your friends are playing before you log in, for example.

Some metagaming is not acceptable. Partying with your friends across the server so you can find out where they are; sending a tell to your friends to tell them there's some hot DM grief going down in Tel; examining someone before you attack them to see what CR and buffs they are, etc, etc. All of these things, and some others I haven't mentioned, are frowned upon, watchlistable, or punishable with a negative exp cookie, depending on what you've done and how adversely it affects others.

Don't think that springing 10 people from nowhere in the middle of a DM event because you've told them there's one going on doesn't adversely affect anyone. It's usually bad for your health. Server parties cause lag, which annoy DMs.. which is bad for your health. So on, so forth.

Remember that rule #1 is common sense. Stick to it.

This also applies to partying up with people your character has no IC reason for being with. IE the uber evil drow walking around calmly with the uber good paladin/cleric whatever.

Play your alignment. Play your race. Play your character. Play not the player.
