A Cry and a Rave

Post by Idonia »

Well first the Rave for Serenyddion, who spent hours helping me with all this and being patient with my severe lack of computer knowledge... we fixed some things but didn't really fix the main problem.

And now I'll cry, cry for HELP because my computer runs NwN painfully slow, the framerates are low. IThis makes it hard to type while moving, I can't even change the camera angle without that lagging and freaking out, it's even more painful when I'm trying to kill something/survive in a DM event.

Serenyddion and I have checked/changed all these things, and I was hoping maybe one of our computer savvy people here could help out with anything we missed. Serenyddion was also nice enough to make this list. :D

- The hardware is GeForce Go 5200, Pentium-4m 3.06GHz, 756 MB of RAM
- Nothing is using the CPU without NwN running
- There is plenty of free RAM even with NwN running
- Updated video card drivers
- Made sure video card was using right AGP mode (4x)
- Made sure processor was running at around correct speed (it's close enough)
-Turned down NwN settings to fast, creature shadow detail is off, skyboxes and environment shadows are off, grass/wind/dynamic lights/shadowcasting lights/anti aliasing/environment mapping/shiny water/VSync/high resolution font and visual effects high are disabled. Texture animations are enabled.
-I have all the latest updates for my Windows XP, version 2002, sp2.

Double check that your sound settings are not set to "software".

Yes, though it is neither on or on the top of my lap.

LOL

I don't know alot of laptops but it sounds like the one you have isn't computer game friendly. Check this site out http://www.alienware.com/ . The're kinda pricey but it's worth it if you're a gamer

Imp,
The laptop you have should work just fine for running NWN. Laptops tend to overheat quickly and that can slow you way down. Try opening it up and using canned air to blow out the dust. Or, if you cant/don't want to open it up. Blow air unto all of the little vent holes to loosen up the dust, then use a vacuum to suck as much as you can out.

A little off topic....
If you're going to break down and get a new one, please don't go with alienware unless you are getting it from a local chain who will deal with any problems you might have with it. It has been a few years since I bought one from them so I don't know if things have changed, but back then you had to ship the computer back to them if something was defective and it would take a month or more to fix it. Not to mention that their customer service department was excessively rude.

My advise is to buy from a chain that has an in-house repair service (BestBuy) and get a big fat warranty. My experience with them has been that they will bend over backwards to fix any problems you have and if you have the warranty its all free. I've had a Toshiba and an HP laptop, both from best buy and both half the price of any custom computer you can get off the Internet. Both have worked like a charm through all sorts of abuse (an avid gamer with 2 small children who like to beat on things).

we keep a small fan blowing on our laptop to keep the heat down. Just have to blow the dust out more frequently though.

Okay, I tried suckin' dust out because I couldn't open it up. It usually is pretty warm in this room and my air conditioner broke... again. The guy just came in to fix it now though he's ran out to get some fixin' equipment. If it's fixed though I'll pump up the AC.

Imp make sure you bundle up if you are going to get that ice room! hypothermia takes only thirty minutes if the temperature is cold enough.. I suggest a portable fan if you have one.. I use laptop as well and this thing gets red hot after a few hours on nwn.. take a break from comp till it cools off..

Just checked in game... framerates are still low. I used full power to try and suck the dust out. My air conditioning still isn't fixed but it's not that hot in here, so I doubt turning it up would make everything magically better. :/

Imp,

Where did you get your video drivers? Most computer manufacturers (especially laptop manufactures) use special drivers for their equipment rather than using the standard video card drivers.

For example, for my tower I use the drivers that MSI (my motherboard manufacturer) provides on their site rather than the drivers from Nvidia.

If you are using the standard drivers from your video card manufacturer, try looking on the website for the laptop manufacture to see if they have a company-specific set of drivers. Or if you are using the company-specific drivers, try using the standard video card drivers. I have worked with many computers and have had to figure out which set of drivers (if there are two) works better.

It does sound like a video card problem. Has it always done this? Did it start to do this after installing a program, a piece of hardware or did you make someother type of change to the computer?

That cat pisses on everything I touch, I swear. I love it to death. Actually, I wish I could love it to death. Or at least kick it around a few times.

Gotta love cats

Jenai had one that actual sprayed her like he was marking his territory. I've never seen her so mad. She picked him up by the scruff of the neck, put him under the faucet for a few minutes and then threw him outside, and that's where he stayed till he ran off.

Would the cat happen to be old? I know old animals can do some weird a$$ things.... my mother's cat is like 20 years old and it pee'd on a shirt that was on the floor and THEN layed right on it. The dirty little B*stard.
