Attacking NPCs

I am reasonably certain you are not allowed to attack any non hostile NPCs without a DM, but I just wanted to double check. I am keen to attack an npc, someone fairly isolated or something similar, nothing like a guard. But if its not ok then I will just have to hope for some DM time.

yeah i asked similar when i first made tanaris, but then waited til he was acctually strong/developed enough to acctually start, (still hasnt technically started) so far hes only killed the untrained warriours who become hsostile thru their npc conversations anyway.

There are a few good prospects around, but it is more fun to 'stalk' them then to just wander up and hack them to bits and cut their hearts out as an offering to your dark god, um not that I have given the matter any thought...
