Question about ranger companions.

Is it possible to acquire a non standard ranger companion on Hala? Is there anything special that I need to do? I haven’t done this sort of thing before and I was just wondering how I start it all off. There is a specific animal I am interested in. I can befriend it with animal friendship.

Thanks. I think that has me sorted to give it a go. My next lv may just be ranger now
