Well .... maybe now it will be a bit more quiet around here

Post by JD Smith »

Well ... as some of you already know; I'm at home kinda looking out for my mom with alzheimers or dementia or whatever they wish to call it. She had a dog that would bark when it needed to be let outside. It had gotten to the point however; that when the dog barked to go outside; my mom would yell back at the dog to shut up with its barking. I work around a 1 am to 6 or 7am job - that barking and yelling sometimes made getting sleep during the day rather difficult.

Last night; as the dog was outside; it slipped and fell on the snow/ice we have around here this time of year. This morning when I got home and wanted to let it outside; it couldn't stand on its own. I had to carry it outside; where it could stand long enough to pee and poo ... walk away from where it was and then fall down again. After carrying it back inside; it just laid down and whimpered and yowled. So; once a vet office opened up; I took it in.

The dog was a purebred cocker spaniel; about 13 yeas old. The vet said that it had arthritis; it had lost muscle mass in the hind quarter - which probably precipitated the fall - it had a heart murmur; and it had bad gums. The gums probably had led to an infection of the liver. Options available included doing a lot of testing and some x-rays; leading to probable medications and a fairly large bill. Going with medications right away and seeing if the dog's condition improved. In either case; the medications are known to be hard on the liver and the kidney; to a lesser extent, and there was a good chance that the dog wouldn't live through the treatment. The final option was to allow the dog a release from its pain by putting it to sleep.

I think I'm going to miss the noise that used to be going on around here ...
