Building a crafter question.

Post by Zeddikhus »

I was thinking of building an alt character who is mostly crafting oriented. A scholar over a combatant who haapens to suppliment himself via crafting.

On other worlds, the crafting system relies on the Lore skill as well as stats, usually Dex & Int. The Hala crafting systems is new to me and I dont understand much of how it works. Searches mostly show postings about bugs and the switch.

If I were to make this new character a scholar/crafter base, is there skills/stats that enhance these areas, like having a high Str/Con and having Discipline at a high rank?

Thanks

What skills and or attributes you need, if any, are top secret :)

I will say use common sense. If you're decide to play a skinny mage, for example, can you really see him making a good blacksmith?

Okay, I understand some of the need for FOIG. I have some thoughts on this...take them all with the fact that I'm forced to work on the 3rd and have a bee in my bonnet. Nothing here is meant to show disrepect...Just you all know...I can get on soapboxes now and again.

So...If I were to build a character with a combat orientation, I would know what stats and skills and classes to focus on to represent the characters pre-game background and training. A Power type build: High Str, Power Attack, Cleave, high damage melee weapon such as a great axe, Fighter/Barbarian base. A Finess based combatant: High Dex, Light weapons, Weapon Finesse, Rogue levels...etc...

The same can be said for a spellcasting build. Stats, skills and feats can be tailored to show the training and intent of the build. The same can be said for (almost) any character build. Bards, Monks, Druids....All have builds.

The first level is critical to a build. And, yes, I know that in an ideal setting, we shouldn't "plan" characters. But, I do know that when I was "first level" as a Scenic Designer, I laid out a "build" for my 4 years. Classes and skills and talents to focus on to give me the ideal starting position in the market. Character builds represent the same for our characters lives.

Now, to say to me that if I want to create a crafter type, over any other build, I have to guess...well.. that's somewhat unfair. I can logic out that Int and Dex, likely Wis too, are important stats. But skills and feats are alot trickier. If I guess that Lore is important and spend skill points and feats to boost this build, using it to show the university training the guy has that aids in how he learns and does thing, only to find I guessed wrong...

Lunch is nearly over and I have to get back to my crappy workload.

My overall point is this: The DnD/NWN system clearly is designed for Heroic character builds. Characters of action. The PW's have created the ability to play, online, less physical adventures and allow us players to explore being social and political in the communities we build online. Yes, I know that I can, and do, play these less-than-heroic types in PnP. There, however, I can understand what I need to properly build the character without being told its a secret.

Whew...Hope I have't chessed anyone.

I have a very good reason for keeping this information secret. If it's common knowledge, it will get abused. I can't say how, but the potential is there.

Unlike Avlis's system, Hala's crafting system is not intended to support a full-time crafter. The reasoning being that on the Heroic Plane of Battle there of course would be skilled craftsmen, but craftsmen would also be skilled in combat, (and/or )magic and/or other skills needed for warfare, just in case they end up in the middle of a fight. What this means is you will never gain enough experience through crafting alone to level your character.

This is OT, but I know many of you will feel inclined to argue the above. I'm in no way wanting to discourage anyone from building a crafter type character. But you should know that keeping your character well rounded and active in many different activities is a lot more rewarding than standing them in front of a placeable constantly.

Back OT, the best advice I can give you in creating a crafting character is to build your character for RP (like anyone on a RP server should be doing) and choose to learn crafting skills appropriate for the class you are taking. Use common sense and trust me, you will have all the appropriate skills.

Thanks for the answers. I wasn't trying to be an ass or anything, I just like to...state my thoughts occasionally. I wasn't thinking of not having the character explore and RP. Just not be a guy running around looking for things to kill. Got one of those already.

I have a good idea of how to approach the character now that I have a better understanding of this crafting system.
