New Player with some questions
Alright folks, general greets, potential new player here etc etc. I've been playing in CoPaP for a couple of years and RP-ing for, well ages actually, I live in the UK but usually have a fairly flexible play schedule despite the timezone. Anyway I was interested in making a character here and had questions about character concept, obviously there's no point in making a character if it doesn't work.
I'm interested in making a CN mercenary female who's priorities are Drinking Fighting and Fu.. er.. Funding - who's idea of a perfect day is being well paid to get into a fight somewhere, then spending the gold that evening in a tavern consuming legendary quantities of ale, while making up boastful drinking songs about it, before coercing some poor patron into her bed for the night.
The kind of character who can accidentally crush a pewter mug in her vice-like grip and completely straightfaced, lick a finger, dip it into the beer and fake a sizzling sound, before leaning across to her elven companion and say "hey girlyman, you ever been set on fire by a real woman before" and roll her eyes suggestively at the staircase to the inn's bedrooms.
Just to make it clear I have no interest in cyber at all, if a scenario gets beyond the comedy of the situation, it can *cut to next morning* and the shock, guilt, recriminations and hangovers.
To improve the comedy factor I'd love to use a female half-ogre, because it allows plenty of situations where her male companions are trying to get away and she's trying to get them drunk etc, and inappropriate crushes on the wrong races etc.
Personality-wise just big and dumb won't really cut it, she needs to have some measure of intelligence hence cunning in the moment to try and outmanuever her current quarry, but not a wise person, with little sense of the big picture and the future consequences of getting what she wants right now. I also need to pin the arrogance necessary to pull it off on something and I want to give her a conflicted racial heritage that pulls her in two very different directions. Plus I don't want her to remember more than snippets of past life, maybe a piece more trickling in now and then over time - but a definite sense that she was the product of a forfeit in a drunken bet and her parents were wildly mismatched on all sorts of levels and had a loathing for each other that lead them into a spiral of increasingly elaborate revenge scenarios on each other, so there is some pathos and sympathy to be mined too.
I'd like to make her RDD because
a) I think that's just funny, and she can claim to be a dragon, "of course I'm a dragon - look I have wings!", if pushed "well okay I'm part ogre on my mothers side" *glares*
b) I've never played a RDD, so that's a new element for me which is nice, and I can see alot of comic potential in her breathing fire at just the wrong point in certain carousing scenarios, voluntarily or ale induced
c) generally I like the vein of "i'm red hot" self promotional bravado she could use, e.g. talking to a cleric of a celibate order and announcing "once you've had this sizzling dragon you're forever off the celibacy wagon, padre" and other cheesy fun like that.
d) having the strength to challenge folk to arm wrestle for "who gets to be on top" *wink*, or if the player is agreeable for e.g. carrying their drunken but weakly protesting character upstairs etc
e) the bard thing is perfect for drunken tavern singing
f) she could be inordinately proud of her magical blood, for example constantly preening her wings, with ham sized fists of course, but preening none the less
g) In her more serious moments having a real curiosity about the dragon blood heritage, also giving access to a more sober motivator, e,g, to travel to a place to discover more
g) do RDD's get tails? I can't remember, but if they do I can see her using it to goose a pretty male character whilst protesting both hands in view innocence
I'd quite like to call her Rissa Broken Toes, not because she limps, she'd say she has perfectly dainty feet, even if everyone else think they resemble two badly parked wagons, but more Rissa Broken Toes as a warning to any of the menfolk she entices to dance with her.
So there... the Ogre Dragon with an Ale Flagon.
All feedback welcome, if it's totally ridiculous and inappropriate to the world I quite understand - I would largely play her for the laughs she might generate, but if needed I could give her more serious moments too as is suitable.

The concept certainly looks interesting and most probably a lot of fun, right up to the the RDD part.
RDD's require team approval before a PC is created and are only granted to medium-long term players, due to the power and RP requirements of the class. By all means, send in a request to the Hala PrC Manager for a possible future PC, but in this case, it would be a no.
You could always go for the Bard/Barbarian or more popular Bard/Fighter route - either would lend itself well to the concept you're looking at. Singing herself into a frenzied rage is something I imagine would become quite well known in a short period of time

If you manage to integrate even half of the character you're portraying above into the game successfully, then I highly doubt the raves would be far behind - everyone likes a good laugh, afterallinversions wrote:I would largely play her for the laughs she might generate, but if needed I could give her more serious moments too as is suitable.

Cheers for all the replies guys. So it looks like there's three courses of action.
1) Shelve the concept, and figure out something different to play.
2) Drop the whole "Touch me, hot damn! I'm the Dragon of Lurve baby!!" (think female james brown voice) concept and figure a different gel to the character's self-image being so far out of whack with her actual image.
3) Keep the character as intended. Mechanically just play it as bard/barb or fighter/barb for e.g. and let the dragon blood just be for now a self-delusion or an affectation. Drop the char concept in the Hala PrC manager queue knowing it's a no atm, but hoping maybe for a reveiw on it sometime down the line when it's established I'm not a muppet (if that's true *wink*). However obviously I wouldn't want to be either accused of cheesing a background, or placing undue expectations on the team. Also it's a little jarring to have an undercurrent hope for a character, that probably won't be realised, e.g. can't do the wing envy or inappropriate fire-breathing gags without the mechanics justifications for them to not be cheese I would think.
oh, and a fourth - just visit Hala with one of my existing CoPaP characters for a bit someday, I was interested in having a native really though.
Whatever thoughts, anyone has to share are quite welcome, oh and is there a newbie orientation post anywhere, e.g. which city on what server is a safe bet for newbie starting? Being a million miles away with lots of things that see you as snack food on the way from wherever you began and the/a main RP centre can be a problem sometimes. What are the main RP centres, on which server?

RDD seems like a littl too much.
When I first started reading I thought MORGAN! (Minus the sexuality part.)
On second and third read I started to see it a little differently. I'd look at dropping the RDD (atleast the initial desire to go that road).
Also use a lot of caution when doing the sexual approach.
You've already stated that you won't be explicit/graphic about it, which is good, but even still when attempting something that you described I think there is a fine line between RPing sexuality well and being cheesy/obvis about it.
I hope you can pull it off!
Something I've learned, and experimented with, is that when you have a set formula you wan't your character to follow, want them to turn out a certain way, when things don't go exactly as planned you get upset. Sometimes its good to have an idea where you wanna go but be open to shit happening" and your character concept taking a 180o turn
Hapened to me heh
Cheers!

Being cheesy and obvious is sort of the crux of the character in alot of ways, she not some mastermind schemer unleashing a carefully constructed plot months down the line, she's a slave to the desires of the now, and aslong as I'm not offending any players, she would often be played for the laughs I and hopefully others might have at the expense of her clumsy nature.T'Holoth Shadowborn wrote: Also use a lot of caution when doing the sexual approach.

Anyway, like anyone, I'm keen on beginning a new char when it appears in mind fairly fully formed. However I totally understand that RDD is a sort of reward class only for vets, so I need to go back over the character concept and either make some changes or figure something else out.
