Items for loot drops
Moderator: Top Team
The new items are in and I have already found some!
I am interested to know what you all think about various items.
Which do you like and why?
Which don't you like and why?
Do you like the descriptions?
Would you like more of certain types of items?
Do you think any are "missing?" For example while writing this I realise I don't think I have made any items for Eilistraee, Lloth or Sune, but other gods have items that reference them.
Basically, from what I understand of our loot system we can swap around the items that can be found from time to time, so having a big list to draw from would be really neat. Also at some stage there may even be custom treasure drops for different areas or even perhaps certain monsters. So having a feel for what people like, dislike and would like to see more of will hopefully give me more ideas for more items.
I do enjoy making items (especially the descriptions!) so pity poor SD who ends up sanity checking them all.

Found a magic lute! Yay! Still too heavy to carry and use, but at least that's reasonable for a lute, as opposed to a set of pipes...
Was with someone who found an amulet of con +2, which I am not terribly happy with, as it cheapens the fact that Soleis worked really hard to be able to make amulets of con +2.
I think it's fine that there are not special items for Lloth and Sune, since neither of them are native and there are comparatively few Llothite and Sunite crafters out in the world making things. Same may or may not go for Elistraee, depending which reference the team has decided to use.
Mostly really like the new things I've been seeing.

There are instruments and fashion items with weight reductions (and some without), you just have to find them or buy them from someone who has
I wondered about adding +2 stat jewellery. It was already available as drops and I just didn’t like the stock descriptions, so I made some nice ones and submitted them. Yeah, they do detract from crafting. Can you eventually craft +3 items? Personally I think there needs to be some thinking about loot and crafting. I don’t know what if anything is going on with crafting though. So far I have personally found 3 +2 stat items across all my characters, so I don’t think they are common.
There are some themed items for less popular gods that either cast a single good spell or have a few charges of a lesser spell. It is no big deal to extend this idea to include other gods and it is always nice to have the chance to find a little something specific to your characters god. Perhaps if I made one for Sune it could be added to the craftables and Soleis could craft them
. They could even have the deity field as a requirement. That would be interesting.
I have received positive feedback about the descriptions and personally I am very pleased with most of them. I think it is an important part of making an item fun. I can’t wait to find an Escape Goat.
I have even made an item based off an old plot I took part in. Any one have ideas for items based off plots and events? I would love to hear them. Things like this would really add some depth of history to the loot. Even now I think about shards from the crystal that used to be in Nagritch. Finding a bit of that would be neat.

How about one-shot dimension door items in lowbie dungeons? Or a lowbie quest that gives these out? True, almost everyone but Lexy can dimension door by magic, psionics, etc.; but until you get that spell or power, a widget that can port you out of the corner where you accidently got yourself trapped would be handy for more people than just Dave.
For higher levels, how about rare or expensive runes of recall, like the ones from Hades? Handy for jumping out of a dungeon when you have to log for the night, if you're not a spellcaster.

items for loot drops
yes,i need that port...right now!how 'bout putting one in each of these !@#$%^&*()_+ corners?

There is an item that has some DD uses (escape goat, ha ha ha I’m so funny) but no one shots. I like the idea though. I could call it a DeDavification Stone, after it’s gnomish inventor who invented it after he got stuck behind his desk….
The Hades recall runes were neat, but would require coding. If I had my way, I would make them a findable loot item which had to be “keyed” to a location. When keyed it would be replaced with the actual recall rune. When activated, the recall rune would trigger something similar to the teleport code, where it checks your inventory for expensive components and then teleports your party to the keyed location, which consumes the rune.
I can’t code though

OK! I'm feeling the item itch again. By now folk would have had a long time to find stuff. Have you noticed any holes in the loot? Don’t find many of a particular type of item perhaps?
I have considered making some interesting armors etc but who would bother to use them? The elven shields for example, I just sell them when I find them and im guessing most people do the same. I don’t want to clog the loot drops with items that no one actually wants
Personally I think there needs to be more throwing axes
On that topic, are there items you find that make you groan and wish you had just found the gold instead?
Also as I am looking to sort out a batch of items to import, this is an excellent time to send me any books you want imported.
PM me if you dont want to clog the thread...

By-and-large, I think the new items are way cool
I still have the peeve that I'd prefer gear that is craftable not also be droppable (except consumables).
I've also observed that equippable gear ought not be only single use or use-per-day, except perhaps at very low levels; at even moderate levels you have access to gear that helps you out all the time, not only once per day; and swapping out gear to use the special ability and then swapping back adds an unnecessary extra step of annoyance.
Also, shields/helmets/weapons that add spell slots are a bad idea, because presumably you take them off when you're out of combat; meaning you have to redo your spell slots way too often; and bards and sorcerers can lose all their spell slots without even casting any spells just by equipping and unequipping.

the things I have seen so far are cool. Still some of them seem a bit of a waste and look to be made for newbies (low level). There really are not that many low level characters out there so I am not sure if they are worth it. NOTE- I maybe WAY off on this.
My thought of items to be added should be single use items. The trick it so make items people will use, not just sell for gold. So the item have to be useful. Most of the single use items across the worlds are not really that great IMO. And I think most people just sell them. So in an effort to get people to use them make them more useful. And in an effort to get people to stop just filling the BIO merchants up with them, lower the gold value of them.
Here is an example of an item I think people would use.
simple.. powerful and will be used, not sold if you lower the GP value of it.
no these should not be common things of course. but you could have Lock of Thor's hair that can be tied to an arrow (imbue arrow with Scintillating Sphere). Or something like Odin's Wink (blindness).
anyways there are my 2 cents
PS- yes level 30 spells are pretty damn powerful, but you want people to use your loot, not sell it to use the gold to buy DM drops that are on auctions off world.

Loki's Laugh
An ancient looking clay jar labeled with 2 old runes. Legends have it that opening this in the direction of another will inflict upon them Loki's will.
single use Tashas Hideous Laughter cast at a level 30 spell.

Last time I made items I found the wizard to be quite limiting. More freedom to play around with caster level and GP value would be handy. GP value is what got several of my more "interesting" items denied
I agree that loot is best if its useful. Not necessarily useful to my characters, but useful to someone.
There is already an item called Loki’s Laugh. It casts wand of wonder on the target. I save them for throwing at other PCs or for DM events. Nothing ends a fight faster than being turned into a chicken….

Now, one thing I should point out is that once an item gets to roughly +2 power then it is getting into the realms of DM drop only. So any items I make will need to be +2 at best (or +6 for skills) I may be able to sneak a few in but SD checks them and has to load them into the treasure system so I don't fancy my chances
Im also fairly certain that items that have 1 use of something are lost when used. So a cloak with +1 saves that casts as spell once is lost when the spell is cast, which sucks.
Somethign I also wonder about is art objects. Would you prefer to find a carving worth 500gp, or 500gp?

Art objects: It depends on the character and, I presume, the object. Unless it was interesting to my character, I would probably prefer the gold pieces. However, something I find useless may be something another character really finds interesting.
Your assessment of the one use cloak is correct. To be fair, this means if you find a second one, then the second one is still useful!
Honestly I am glad that not all random loot is amazing charges of high level spell use items... because... well having a ton of spells is something a caster is supposed to have not a noncaster

a thought hit me recently
there are those cool wax covered card IG currently. I was thinking change them a bit, OR make a new set.
make them a bit like gambling -
a card unscratched you can sell for say 200 gold
once you scratch it you get a new item (card), the new item is random and is worth more depending on what the card you get is. For instance you get a Rat with a (1) on it. Its only worth 2 gold. Or say you get a Ghoul (23) it happens to be worth 460 gold.
this way people can gamble for the gold, or just sell them for 200 gold.
just a thought

I think I would prefer to find 500gp. Even with Jayem and that he has an oddments cabinet he’d have no use for the artworks. A DM reward that is rare or unique and has a story attached might be fun to have on display. A loot-drop thing that has no story save “I hit something, it had this” and where there would be many of them, might as well sell.
Single use items do vanish as has been said though it is possible to alter item properties through a script, so rather than “Spell : One use” it would be “Unique Power: One use” with that calling a script to cast the spell and remove the power from the item. Likely too much work though and unless there was a way to regain the power or they had found several of the item then people might be rather unwilling to use it rather than save it for an emergency.
