If a Psion is a special case and the abilities possessed by one are rare, then how widespread should people's knowledge of Psions really be? If someone came up to me and said, "I'm a Psion" I'd probably figure it was a military rank or hybrid race. It's annoying as hell when people are like, "I study magic, but I'm also a Psion" Ooooohhh Psion. Way to kill the mystique. Psionics are a powerful ability, but that doesn't mean you go around flaunting it... it takes away from the class.
Also, the illusionist who was an outgoing psion... are you sure he didn't start as a mage and say"oh, that looks cool, I'll play part psion too"? Becoming a psion, in my opinion, is like taking the vows of a monk. It should change you, change your perspective -- your mind has been opened unto a whole new world. The behavior of a character should change accordingly -- whether they were outgoing in the past or not.
Nobody's born a priest or monk IRL, but when you take the vows, you play the part. A psion should be equally dedicated to the path of self-realization and inner harmony. It isn't a mind-game or a trick of force. It's a way of life.
I wish people wouldn't declare "I'm a Psion"

"What is optimism?" asked Cacambo.
"Alas" said Candide, "It is the mania of maintaining that all is well when we are miserable."
