Pronunciation of Hala
I had an argument with a friend a while back about the pronunciation of Hala.
There's 3 different ways (that I use anyways) of pronouncing an 'a' so that gives 9 differnent ways of saying it.
The three different ways are:
- eh, hey, play
- all, hall, fall
- ack, plaque, pat
Apparently, the proper way would be Hey'lah because having a consonant between two vowels gives the first it's long-sound. Halo is the most similar english word I could think of and dictionary.reference.com says it's hA'lO ('a' from pay and 'o' from toe) so it could be hay'lay too.
I use hah'lah (both 'a's from pat) because the word Hala is arabic (for hello or welcome or something close to that) and it just sounds more arabic to me.

This is a page on arabic pronounciation and it gives hand as an example of the ha sound. So I guess my guess at hah'lah sounding arabic is a little off...

In hawaiian, lauhala (leaves from a hala tree (cool, it's a tree too)) is pronounced lau hah' lah so the hala part would just be hah'lah.

They say something about khalakuta; I don't think they know either.
So how do you guys say it?

I thought it was Hala.. as in Hala at me later. or I always screw up and it makes Sara Hala at me. Of course.... that could be wrong... Why dont we just prounounce it with text? as in Hala... or if you have an accent like I do say Hala. its easy.
((really though. I think from a gramatical point of view in modern english it wouild most likely be pronounced Hall Uh. not sure though as I dont studdy linguistics.. I do other things.))
