Lets say a certain player oh... ran into another certain player and took them prisoner. In the case where there isn't a DM around is it sill ok to "search for" and confiscate stuff like lockpicks and weapons and such?
I thought I remembered when the Tower of Iron Will folks captured Kyle, they had "taken" his stuff, but I don't think they actually took his stuff. Which, I thought was a great idea as everyone seemed to be on board.
I guess I am looking for guidance on where the line is between realistic capture and invading another player's stuff and what is "usual" practice. I hope that makes sense. I sometimes am not sure how clear I am when I don't exactly know what question I am trying to ask.
Thanks!

I would say that what may or may not be okay for an individual is probably dependent on the player...in general I would lean towards not taking too much unless you're sure they have some way of getting it back even if they are sprung free by others.
There's not any 'usual' practice as far as I know on Ysgard, because in general capture is avoided...there's very little a player can do in a tiny jail cell unless there's constantly someone else around to bug.

When the Tower of Iron Will captured Kyle, we took everything off him ICly, but we did not actually OOCly make him remove any of his stuff, and when he got away he got to where his stuff was kept and "re-equipped" himself before we could stop him.
I think this is better than actually having the PC hand over stuff (meaning his own cool stuff, like armor and weapons and such, NOT meaning stuff he stole), because it could result in accidental loss of items, and is time-consuming and unweildy if there's a lot of stuff. However, I would not mind seeing some stuff get confiscated for good (not plot stuff or very expensive gear, but nasty potions, poisoned arrows, that sort of thing); there ought to be some adverse consequence of getting captured.

Agreed. Look to the Gentleman's Agreement for guidance.
If it's lootable, it's takeable. If it can be purchased in a store, it's takeable. If it's DM given.. leave it alone unless a Dm gives permission to take it and in stead just "emote" having taken it.
The way the TOIW was almost perfect. It worked out well for all characters involved and made things fun, but most definately I can see taking parishables and stuff that can easily be repurchased at a generic store.

Verandis: Thanks! That helps! If I were the one captured, I certainly would give different players different ooc permissions for different items of mine.
Rudiki: that was exactly what I didn't want to have happen either. I really do think that's a great idea.
Arkon: Thanks, as usual. I think the combo of all three ideas can be easily worked out situationaly for all parties involved.
